The Blame Game

Oh, don’t you just love tragedies? It’s like Christmas for stupid people. When a tragedy strikes, it’s a chance for morons across the globe to push their small-minded agendas. The latest case is that of the Isla Vista shooting that claimed the lives of six and wounded 13 others. The killer in this case is 22-year-old Elliot Rodger who revealed serious mental issues in his manifesto and various YouTube videos. Despite that, however, the public and media are placing the blame on everything else EXCEPT mental illness.

Blame Numero Uno: Those Damn Guns/ Idiot Government

Richard Martinez is the father of one of the victims, 20-year-old Christopher Michael-Martinez. He has since been on a media frenzy blaming guns and careless politicians.

Shooting rampage in Isla Vista, California

“Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA”

No, Mr. Martinez. Chris died because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. That’s it.

My kid died because nobody responded to what occurred at Sandy Hook. Those parents lost little kids. It’s bad enough that I lost my 20-year-old, but I had 20 years with my son. That’s all I’ll ever have but those people lost their children at six and seven years old.”

I won’t dig too much into Mr. Martinez for the sake of not being a complete cunt. He unexpectedly lost his kid and it’s understandable to be questioning everything and to be in a state of rage and agony. I will, however, point out the obvious: Regardless of whether or not gun laws are tightened, people will still get a hold of them and use them. Drugs have been illegal for quite some time now and yet they are still widely available and easy to obtain. Also, let’s not forget that Elliot stabbed three people in his apartment before embarking on his drive by. Are we then to ban all sharp objects? Should we make anything that could be used as a shank illegal? I always tell people I’m so mad I could stab them in the face with my pencil, should all writing utensils be banned? Extreme examples, sure but my point is this: If someone wants to cause physical harm to another, they are going to do so despite the legality or method. By banning all guns do you really thing you’re gonna stop the next Sandy Hook or Aurora movie theater shooting? This person is hellbent on killing human beings I don’t think illegally obtaining a gun is going to detour him. Sure we can pretend that by making it “harder” to obtain said guns it will save lives but come on, remember the whole illegal drug thing? Yeeeaahhh.

Blame Numero Dos: Damn you, Hollywood!

Washington Post critic Ann Hornaday is placing the blame on movies and targeting specifically Judd Apatow.

“How many students watch outsized frat-boy fantasies like “Neighbors” and feel, as Rodger did, unjustly shut out of college life that should be full of “sex and fun and pleasure”? How many men, raised on a steady diet of Judd Apatow comedies in which the shlubby arrested adolescent always gets the girl, find that those happy endings constantly elude them and conclude, “It’s not fair”?”

I agree, Ann here makes a valid point. Growing up, I always thought prom was going to be like this:

How sad was I when my prom was so damn awful I was home by 10pm? VERY SAD. Though, I wasn’t all stabby or anything. Not even when I realized I would have no fun kooky friends in high school like this:

Movies and T.V. can give a false hope but come on, remember that it’s all just pretend. It’s meant to entertain and provide escapism, not a roadmap of milestones. To blame Hollywood for the actions of one mentally ill individual is pretty damn stupid.

Blame Numero Tres: # Yes All Women/ Misogynist Killing Spree

This one is a bit tricky. Elliot Rodger was a 22-year-old virgin who held on deeply to rejection from a very young age, as evidenced by his manifesto and the pretty blonde girl whom he felt bullied him. Does it condone what he did? Hell no, of course not. It does, however provide a possible reason why. Using this hashtag Yes All Women nonsense focuses the blame on something inaccurate. Now women everywhere are blaming men and society for lack of equality, using this tragic event as a platform for their bullcrap.

Let’s make a long story….still kinda long:  #Yes All Women, CALM THE FUCK DOWN.

Elliot Rodger didn’t hate women per se. He hated the fact that he couldn’t get women. There’s a difference. He hated the fact that he was 22 and still a virgin. He killed more men than women in his “misogynistic rampage”, what say you to that?  What the hell does your making one dollar an hour less than your male counterpart or your great-grandmother fighting for the right to vote have to do with this guy shooting up his peers? NOTHING. This is a case of one guy who has a history of mental illness not an excuse for women to complain about dudes ogling their boobs. Don’t forget, us Western women have it pretty good compared to the world as a whole. Would you like to be stoned to death for marrying somebody  you love? I didn’t think so. Stop trying to turn this into something it’s not. Everyone knows you are woman,  just ease up on the roaring.

This shooting has nothing to do with gun control, movies or women. This shooting has to do with mental health and the stigma surrounding it. Anyone with a mental defect knows what I’m talking about. They know how hard it is to tell somebody, even a loved one, that you are going to seek help. They know how hard it is to ignore the criticism and comments.  Hearing “You’re just weak!” on the regular only exacerbates your already skewed self-perception. They also know how hard it is to have to describe to your employer what medications you are on and why you have one or two doctors appointments every week.

I don’t condone what Eliot did but I completely understand his state of mind. I didn’t lose my virginity until I was 27, I practically had to give it away. To this date I have never had a boyfriend and I’m almost 30. I’ve never had a guy who wanted to hold my hand or ask me out on a date. I’ve been rejected by the male of the species in some of the cruelest ways imaginable. I used to be so ashamed of admitting to anyone that I needed medication or a shrink just to function. It’s uncomfortable when people flippantly throw around, “Oh my goodness, you’re so bipolar!” because they have no idea how hard it truly is just to make it through the day. Some of the comments and sneers is enough to make me feel completely inferior and defective. It’s enough to make me think twice about going to my appointments and taking my meds. I know I am not the only one who has felt this way and for all of us, we can relate to Eliot. Again, let me stress, I don’t agree with what he did but I understand why.

If people could only stop labeling them as monsters and see them as human beings, then we could focus on how to treat them and possibly prevent further tragedies. Brushing them off as inhuman and blaming everyone else doesn’t solve a damn thing and it sure as hell doesn’t bring back all the loved ones lost.
